SpeakingVibes vs Duolingo for speaking Greek: a fair comparison
Updated 24 October 2026 · 7 min read
SpeakingVibes makes one of the tools compared here. We've tried to be fair: where another option is better for something, we say so.
Two very different tools get compared constantly, so here is the comparison done honestly. Duolingo is a gamified course: lessons, points, a streak. SpeakingVibes is a conversation teacher: you talk, she answers. They're good at different things, and for most people the right answer is a specific combination rather than a winner.
Side by side
| Duolingo (Greek) | SpeakingVibes (Katerina) | |
|---|---|---|
| What you do | Tap, match, translate, occasionally repeat a sentence | Speak out loud; she answers in Greek; you continue |
| Speaking | Repeat-after-me only | Open conversation — you produce the sentences |
| Corrections | Right/wrong on the exercise | After your turn: what you said, the natural version, why |
| Grammar | Patterns by repetition, little explanation | Explained when you ask or get corrected; not a syllabus |
| Vocabulary | Structured course vocabulary | Words from your conversations, saved to flashcards; topic lists to browse |
| Listening | Short synthetic clips; no stories for Greek | A real voice (Katerina's) at the speed you ask for |
| Level | Up to about A2 | Beginner to advanced — the conversation adapts |
| Habit / motivation | Excellent: streaks, leagues, reminders | A daily reminder email; no leagues |
| Time to first real conversation | Months, if at all | Day one, badly — which is the point |
| Price | Free with ads; Super ≈ $7–13/month | Free daily credits; Plus $9.99/month |
Where Duolingo wins
- Getting you to show up. The streak mechanics are the best in the business. If your problem is consistency, Duolingo solves it.
- The very beginning. Alphabet and first words with zero fear — nobody's listening, nothing to produce.
- Structure. A course has a path; a conversation doesn't. Some people need the path.
- Price. Free, with ads, forever.
Where SpeakingVibes wins
- Speaking, which is the thing most people actually want. You can't finish a Duolingo tree and hold a conversation; you can't have ten conversations with Katerina and not speak some Greek.
- Corrections that explain. You said "θέλω ένας καφές", a Greek would say "θέλω έναν καφέ", because… — that sentence teaches more case grammar than a week of tapping.
- It goes past A2. The conversation gets harder as you do. Duolingo's Greek stops where conversation starts.
- Your own situations. The job interview you have next week; the conversation with your partner's mother. Duolingo can't rehearse those.
Who should use which
Complete beginner, no Greek at all: Duolingo (or Language Transfer, which is free and better for understanding) for two to three weeks to get the alphabet and 100 words — then start speaking. Waiting longer than that is how people become permanent beginners.
Know some Greek, can't speak it: You don't need another course. You need reps. This is exactly the person SpeakingVibes is for.
Want both: Five minutes of Duolingo for the habit and the words; ten minutes of conversation for the Greek. Together they cost nothing.
The honest caveats about us
Katerina is an AI. She's patient and available and she corrects well, but a good human tutor notices things about your Greek that a model doesn't, and nothing replaces a real Greek dinner table. We think of SpeakingVibes as the daily reps between the human moments, not a replacement for them. And the free tier is limited by design — enough for a daily short conversation, not for hours.
Questions people ask
- Is SpeakingVibes better than Duolingo for Greek?
- For speaking, yes — it's a conversation you have out loud, with corrections, and Duolingo's Greek course has almost no speaking. For building a daily habit and the very first words, Duolingo is better. Most people do best with both: five minutes of Duolingo, ten of conversation.
- Can I use SpeakingVibes as a complete beginner?
- Yes. Tell Katerina you're a complete beginner and the first lesson starts with hello and your name, slowly. Two weeks of alphabet and first words on Duolingo or Language Transfer first makes it easier, but it isn't required.
- Is SpeakingVibes free?
- A free account comes with daily conversation credits with every teacher. Plus ($9.99/month) gives you up to 100 sentences a day and unlocks every vocabulary topic.
- Does Duolingo Greek teach speaking?
- Only repeat-after-me exercises. It doesn't ask you to produce your own sentences and doesn't answer back, which is why it's rarely enough on its own.
- Which should I start with?
- If you know zero Greek, two or three weeks of Duolingo or Language Transfer for the alphabet and first words, then add daily speaking. If you already know some Greek and can't speak it, start speaking today.
