Learn Greek online: tutor, app or AI teacher?

Updated 24 October 2026 · 7 min read

SpeakingVibes makes one of the tools compared here. We've tried to be fair: where another option is better for something, we say so.

Learning Greek online now means choosing between three very different things: a human tutor over video, a self-study app, or an AI teacher you talk to. They cost different amounts, give different feedback, and fit different lives. Here's how to choose — and the combination most people end up with.

When a tutor is the right choice

If you can afford an hour a week, do it. A good Greek tutor hears things no app or model does — the vowel you're flattening, the phrase that's grammatical but no Greek would say — and the booked slot keeps you honest. Prices are lower than people expect: plenty of excellent tutors in Greece charge €10–15 an hour on italki or Preply. The weakness is simply arithmetic: one hour a week is not enough speaking to build the skill. Use the other six days.

When an app is the right choice

For the alphabet, the first few hundred words and the habit of opening Greek every day, a self-study app is the cheapest, easiest thing there is, and Duolingo's free tier is fine for it. For Greek specifically, Language Transfer (free audio) is the one that actually teaches you how the language works. The weakness: none of them make you speak. If speaking is the goal — and for most Greek learners it is — an app is the side dish.

When an AI teacher is the right choice

When you need to speak every day and you can't — or won't — pay for a tutor every day. Katerina is a conversation you have out loud: she answers in Greek at your level, slows down when asked, corrects you afterwards with a reason, and remembers what you've talked about. The strengths are patience and availability; the honest weaknesses are that she isn't human, she won't push you through a syllabus, and the free credits cover a short daily conversation rather than hours.

The combination most people land on

  • Daily: a ten-minute spoken conversation (AI teacher or exchange partner) and five minutes of vocabulary (app or flashcards).
  • Weekly: one tutor hour, spent on the things only a human can do — your questions, your pronunciation, the cultural stuff.
  • Once: Language Transfer, start to finish, to understand how Greek works.

That's roughly €50–100 a month if you take the tutor, and nearly free if you don't. Either way, the speaking is daily — which is the part that decides whether you learn Greek. See the full method in how to learn Greek as an adult.

Questions people ask

Is it better to learn Greek with a tutor or an app?
A tutor gives the best feedback and accountability; an app gives cheap daily vocabulary practice but almost no speaking. For speaking, combine a weekly tutor hour with daily conversation — with an AI teacher or an exchange partner — in between.
How much do online Greek tutors cost?
On italki and Preply, roughly €8–25 an hour; many excellent tutors based in Greece charge €10–15. Private tutors outside the platforms vary more.
Can an AI really teach me to speak Greek?
It can give you what most learners lack: daily speaking practice with corrections, without fear or scheduling. It doesn't replace a human tutor's judgement, and the two work best together.
What's the best way to learn Greek online for free?
Language Transfer for understanding, free vocabulary lists and Duolingo's free tier for words, YouTube for listening, and SpeakingVibes' free daily credits or a Tandem partner for speaking.
Are online Greek classes worth it?
Group classes are good for structure and company, weaker for speaking time per person. If speaking is the goal, a private tutor hour plus daily conversation gives far more Greek per euro.
